Clare Coss

Clare Coss’ play, Emmett, Down in My Heart, is currently a theatre in production as a film in Berlin. Translated into German, Emmett, Tief in meinem Herzen and produced by the Afro-German Label Noir Theatre. Clare Coss, a librettist, and composer Mary Watkins, collaborated on a new opera, Emmett Till, inspired by the 1955 lynching of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till. A premier concert production of Emmett Till is to take place at John Jay College Gerald W Lynch Theater NYC, March 23-24, 2022. Watkins and Coss received the GRIOT Circle’s 2019 Changemaker Award in honor of their collaboration. Clare Coss is the author of the prize-winning play Emmett, Down in My Heart, premiered at the Tucson Alliance of Dramatic Artists (TADA!), 2014. Before winning the TADA! Contest, the play had several staged readings in New York, East Hampton, and Chicago starring Kathleen Chalfant, Danny Glover, Kenny Leon, Linda Powell, Mercedes Ruehl, and others. Translated into French, Dans Les Rivieres du Delta was presented at Moving Parts Theatre in Paris. Her other plays include Dr. Du Bois and Miss Ovington (New Federal Theatre in association with Castillo, NYC; The Robey Theatre in L.A.; The Du Bois Center, Great Barrington, MA); Growing Up Gothic (Theatre for the New City and Interart Theatre); Lillian Wald: At Home on Henry Street (New Federal Theatre and Lincoln Center Theatre on Film and Video Collection); The Blessing (American Place Theatre); Our Place in Time: Ten Scenes from the Twentieth Century (Women’s Project Theater and New Federal Theatre); and The Star Strangled Banner (Berkshire Theatre Festival Barn).
