As Dean of the School of Health Professions at New York Institute of Technology, Gordon Schmidt, Ph.D., FACSM, provides guidance, strategic planning, and thought leadership for the school. A leader in healthcare on Long Island, Dr. Schmidt has worked with faculty and students at New York Tech to ensure a high-quality professional education to future nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and physician assistants, and to exercise science and nutrition students. He is also coordinating a workforce development grant through the New York State Department of Labor that targets military veterans, people with autism, and those who are under or unemployed. This initiative will provide training for 300 healthcare professionals and serve as a launchpad for further post-professional certifications for practitioners in multiple disciplines locally and beyond.
Dr. Schmidt received training at McGill University in Montreal and Indiana University. A fellow and a director of the American College of Sports Medicine, he has developed novel curriculum and innovative programming in Asia with a research emphasis on intergenerational family dynamics as they relate to physical activity and nutritional behaviors. Throughout his career, he has pursued recurrent themes of engagement in experiential practices, pursuit of technological development, and participation in a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Schmidt worked with YMCAs and schools in Paterson, N.J., on a $2.5 million grant called “21st-Century Learning Communities.”
